    Childcare Subsidy in United Kingdom

The UK combines funded hours (a direct reduction in your bill) with Tax-Free Childcare (a 20% government top-up) and, for lower-income households, the Universal Credit childcare element. Funded hours are the big lever; Tax-Free Childcare covers the rest.

The £100,000 cliff edge is brutal

If either parent's adjusted net income goes over £100,000, the household loses Tax-Free Childcare and the funded hours for working parents entirely — not gradually. A pay rise from £99,000 to £101,000 can cost a family thousands of pounds a year in childcare support. It is one of the few places in the tax and benefit system where earning £1 more leaves you materially worse off, and it is why pension salary sacrifice is so commonly used to stay under the line.

    What you can claim

    Funded childcare hours (England)

Government-funded hours at a registered provider.

    How much
Up to 30 hours a week for 38 weeks a year for children from 9 months to 4 years old in working households. Providers can spread the same total over more weeks at fewer hours.
What changes when you earn more
Lost completely if either parent's adjusted net income exceeds £100,000.

    Tax-Free Childcare

An online account the government tops up.

    How much
The government adds £2 for every £8 you pay in, up to £2,000 per child per year (£4,000 for a disabled child).
What changes when you earn more
Same £100,000 adjusted net income cut-off per parent. You also cannot use it at the same time as Universal Credit or tax credits.

    Universal Credit childcare element

Reimbursement of childcare costs for UC claimants.

    How much
Up to 85% of your childcare costs, to a monthly maximum of £1,071.09 for one child and £1,836.16 for two or more.
What changes when you earn more
Universal Credit itself tapers as earnings rise, so the childcare element fades out with the rest of the award. Choosing it rules out Tax-Free Childcare.

    Worth knowing

    • Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own funded-hours schemes with different ages and hours; Tax-Free Childcare is UK-wide.
    • Funded hours rarely cover the full cost of a full-time place — most nurseries charge for meals, nappies and hours beyond the funded entitlement.

Figures are quoted from the official sources linked above and can change at each budget. Always confirm your own entitlement with the relevant government service before making a decision.

Will a pay rise leave me better off after childcare in United Kingdom?
Not automatically. A pay rise is taxed, and in most systems it also reduces childcare support, so the useful figure is what lands in your account after tax, after childcare and after any lost subsidy. Put both salaries into the calculator and compare the household's take-home in each case rather than the gross pay.

    Run your own numbers

Support rules are only half the answer. Enter your household's income, childcare bill and commute to see whether the second salary clears the cost of care once tax and lost subsidy are taken off.
