    Day rate to monthly fee

Most nurseries bill monthly in equal instalments: day rate × days per week × weeks per year (often 51), divided by 12. That is why a £75 day rate at three days a week is about £956 a month, not £900.

Part-time is cheaper per month, not per hour

Nurseries charge by the session, so fewer days cuts the bill in proportion. Half-day sessions are often more expensive per hour than full days.

    What brings the bill down

Funded hours (from 9 months for working parents in England), Tax-Free Childcare (20% off up to £2,000 a year per child) or Universal Credit (up to 85%). The calculator shows the first two.

    Frequently asked questions

How much are nursery fees per month in the UK?

A full-time place for a child under two averaged about £302 a week in Great Britain in 2024 (Coram), roughly £1,300 a month. In Inner London it was about £428 a week, around £1,850 a month.

How do I calculate monthly nursery fees?

Multiply the day rate by days per week and weeks per year charged, then divide by 12. Most nurseries charge for 51 weeks.

Why do nurseries charge for 51 weeks?

Many nurseries bill all year to keep the place, closing only between Christmas and New Year. Term-time places charge fewer weeks but are rarer for under-threes.

Do funded hours reduce nursery fees?

Yes. Working parents in England can get 30 funded hours a week for 38 weeks. Turn on funded hours in the calculator to see the effect.
